Do you love imagining creative stories? Making story dice is a great way to fuel your creativity and ensure you’ll never run out of ideas! Watch the video or read below for a step-by-step guide on how to make your own story dice at home:
Step One: Get Materials

You’ll need to gather the following materials before you start making your story dice:
- A pencil, an eraser, and some scrap paper for all your amazing ideas
- Something to colour with (markers, crayons, pencil crayons, or pens)
- Scissors and a glue stick to put your dice together.
- A printed copy of this cube template or a piece of paper and a ruler to draw your own template
Step Two: Brainstorm

First, you’ll want to brainstorm some categories. Make a list of some of the elements that will be in your story, like characters, locations, and time periods.
Choose one of the categories that you want help coming up with ideas for, then make a list of six things in that category. Each of these six ideas will be on one of the sides of your die.
Step Three: Sketch It Out

If you’re not using the cube template, use a pencil and a ruler to draw six squares so that they look like the template. Don’t forget to add the little tabs on the outsides of some of the squares!
In each square, use a pencil to sketch what you want the sides of your die to look like. You can use words, drawings, or both!
Step Four: Colour and Cut

Colour in your designs using as many different colours as you like. Then cut out the cube template along the solid lines.
Step Five: Fold and Glue

Fold along the dotted lines of the cube template. Then put some glue on each of the tabs and stick the sides of the die together.
Step Six: Create a Story!

Now you can roll your die and create a story with the idea it gives you. You could also make a few different story dice and combine the ideas to make a story! You can write your story down, draw it, or tell it to a friend.
You can also use these dice for things other than storytelling — for example, you can make some reflection dice with different ideas to contribute peaceful thoughts to your day.
Your story dice are now complete. Don’t forget to take a picture and share it on social media with #DAREtogether and tag DAREarts so we can see what you’ve created!
